Human Hair vs. Synthetic
Human hair is expensive compare to synthetic. It can be styled and managed easily. But it may be hard to get the vibrant colours seen in anime.
Synthetic hair comes in all colours and some types can be dyed, blow dried, and curled with an iron on low settings. Be sure to read the label.
Wig Caps
Wig caps are very useful for keeping the real hair from creeping out. They also flatten it out so that the wig lays flat. If possible try to match the cap to the hair colour.
Wig heads
If cosplaying is a long term hobby then invest in a wig head. Foam heads can be easily found online and in wig/hair store.
They are handy for keeping wigs in the right shape and for styling. Keep in mind the heads are made small, so the style applied on a foam head may look different when worn.
